This month, Jan and I said goodbye to our front lawn. The problem we had with our front lawn was that it produced nothing but an image. It offered us nothing in return.
As the transformation began, we gave away our lawnmower (Hallelujah!) and began the work required to transform our front yard. This is still a work in progress. We have another week of work ahead of us.
Our front yard is littered with our tools , piled bags of mulch awaiting dispersal, and 3 yards of decomposed granite that was dumped in our driveway. We are planting a small orchard of fruit trees and will fill our wooden planters with a variety of produce and herbs. Walkways of decomposed granite are beginning to crisscross our front yard. We are in the process of laying down a brick patio where someday in near future, we will sit at a small garden table and watch our neighbors pass by. It has been labor-intensive project since we are the only ones doing the work.
Our landscaping project reminds me of the kind of change that happens in God’s Kingdom. That kind of change requires steps of obedience. We need to show up and do the internal work required in order the reap the benefits of what was planted in our obedience. No one can do this kind of labor for us.
We still have loads of decomposed granite to wheelbarrow in, more bricks to lay and decisions to make on where to position our garden pots. The process reminds me of a life of faith for those who follow the Lord.
Each day as believers, we have choices to make that will honor the Lord and begin to transform our lives in the process. While we are certainly new creations in the Spirit, we are a work in progress. The Lord is creating in us a life that will reveal our spiritual reality. It takes time and effort to get there, but it’s worth the investment because in the future, we will begin to harvest the fruit of our labor.
