Some things are worth contending over, such as the divinity and exclusivity of salvation in Jesus, the nature of God, and living a holy life. The remaining issues are not worth dividing the Church over, as they are merely matters of human opinion.

Paul was straightforward in his instruction to Titus, “Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These things are useless and a waste of time” (Titus 3:9). Today, we have our spiritual pedigrees and additions to the faith that creates bondage, not freedom.

Regarding the division these spiritually combative people create, Paul had strong words of instruction for Titus, “If people are causing divisions among you, give a first and second warning. After that, have nothing more to do with them. For people like that have turned away from the truth, and their own sins condemn them” (vs. 10-11).

Those who are dividing the Church are warring with weapons that are useless in God’s Kingdom and are a waste of our time. They pull people away from their faith in God to follow their confident declarations about what they believe is true and demand that others follow their lead.

Suppose someone continues to do this after receiving a first and second warning. In that case, we should have nothing to do with these dividers, even if we want to continue trying to explain the truth to them after they have proven themselves unteachable.

Paul’s strong words are what kept the Church focused on what truly matters and prevented them from being led astray by those with a personal agenda.

We should choose our spiritual battles wisely. We can only do this under the guidance of the Spirit to make sure we are contending for what matters to God, not to the Spirit of division.
