Last night, Jan and I drove back home from Seattle. We went on a cruise to Alaska. This was a family retreat with Jan’s side of the family. It was a gift given to us by her family. All the siblings and their spouses were in attendance.
Each day, the cruise ship published a daily agenda of happenings on board. One activity was called Silent Disco. This is where people put on a song via headphones from the disco era and danced in silence, jerking to the beats of the music. Only the person wearing the headphones can hear the music. Onlookers would see people dancing in silence to the tune without the onlookers hearing anything. It looked like the participants had lost their minds living in a silent world that only they could hear.
In some ways, what we are seeing in some parts of the Church, and within the larger culture, looks and sounds out of synch with God’s truth and common sense. Opinions are declared and actions are taken that look like the life of a Silent Disco dancer, detached from the surrounding reality.
Paul addressed this when he wrote to Timothy, “For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths” (II Timothy 1-4). They are people who will dance to the music of deception.
Those who watch this spiritual disco dancing are not meant for our amusement and mockery. It is a call to prayer, not just observing the dance and being disgusted with its spectacle.
Those who have allowed themselves to put on the headphones of deception need our prayers. Only God’s word and the ministry of the Spirit can change the dance tune. We should pray for the Lord to reveal Himself to the dancers. Only His revelation has the power to bring a change to the music.
