Over many years, I’ve told people to pursue Jesus if they want to know the truth about life. Reading yet another book or pursuing an advanced degree cannot produce the truth. Truth is only found in Jesus. He provides everything we need because He is the way, the truth, and the life.

Paul wrote of Jesus, “In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). If we want to be considered wise and informed about how to live this life, we must pursue Jesus.

“I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments” (vs. 4). Some of the most spiritually ignorant people are those who have created well-crafted arguments to challenge the truth only found in the Lord.

“Let your roots grow down into him and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness” (vs. 7). Paul is describing intimacy with the Lord. It is a departure from that intimacy when our faith becomes soft and available to deceiving spirits.

“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ” (vs. 8).

Taking someone captive means to be taken as a slave to do the bidding of the one who took them captive. That enslaved person was taken captive because, at some point, they were no longer rooted in Christ and allowed empty philosophies and well-crafted arguments to define their faith.

Our most powerful weapon in spiritual warfare is to remain anchored in Christ. Pursuing that intimacy will send shudders through the kingdom of darkness.
