If you are an average American, each day you either read or watch a preferred news source. Our favorite news source affirms our bias. Hopefully, that affirmation is revealing the truth, not parroting a prepared narrative created by people who are motivated by a philosophical orientation and ratings, not by truth. The only way we can be protected against deception is to submit to God and His word as the only faithful interpreters of reality, not our favorite news source.
There is only one reliable news source – the written and spoken word of God. To those who presume to hold an elevated awareness above those they consider to be the unenlightened and uninformed masses, Paul had something to say “Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you” (I Corinthians 1:26).
The Lord offered us insight into how He delivers news to His followers “I will tell you the future before it happens” (Isaiah 42:9). This is the forewarning of God that reveals news not yet seen on earth. It allows us to prepare our hearts and lives for what is coming and not live in fear.
The Lord revealed how sudden His news will be revealed “Long ago I told you what was going to happen. Then suddenly I took action” (Isaiah 48:3). To the uninformed, the suddenness of God’s action will be a shock, a shock that could disrupt a fragile faith that relies on natural and predictable information to interpret their reality.
Even when we think we know all there is to know about God and how His Kingdom works, it is important to remember this about the Lord “Now I will tell you new things, secrets you have not yet heard. They are brand new, not things from the past” (Isaiah 48: 6-7). The most informed prophetic voices, in the end, remain uninformed regarding all that God will reveal and accomplish. This requires humility of us, especially when we think we are fully informed on matters of the Spirit. That humility will keep our spiritual ears from getting plugged and our eyes from being blinded by pride.
The most reliable interpretive source for the current events of this life and what is to come is found by seeking truth through God’s word and the voice of the Spirit. We position ourselves for this kind of revelation by keeping the volume of God’s voice raised above the din of all the natural news being pushed into our ears and eyes each day.
So good.. Thank you..
Amen! Great reminder, Garris. We can learn from sheep that only the voice of THEIR shepherd is important. As we train our ears to listen to the most important voice (that of our Good Shepherd), the other voices can be ignored, even if they are “screaming.” John 10:2-5. Other “shepherds” (news media, flashy preachers, pundits, etc.), if listened to at all, should be tested against the Truth, as you said so well!
