Those who want to change God’s word to accommodate their sins are being influenced by a spirit. That spirit has been called “the spirit of the age.” It wants to rewrite God’s word to comply with a degrading social norm. Sadly, for some in the Church, it has become easy to embrace such degradation, even applaud it, if one does not hold onto the foundational truths of Scripture. 

Paul wrote about the power behind such accommodations, “You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature” (Ephesians 2: 2-3).

These deceiving spirits are saboteurs of our faith. Their mission is to make us victims of their sabotage. Only God’s word can protect us and lead us away from the consequences of their sabotage.

The Lord never promised that following His truth would be easy. The devil knows which demonic powers to call into service to sow doubt in the battlefield of our minds. Not compromising God’s truth will set us apart from the world. It’s in that place of separation where the strongest attacks against our faith will occur.

Those attacks on our faith can manifest in many ways. It attacks our understanding and the assignment of God’s original design for humanity, blurring the lines of our understanding of human sexuality. It can make loving parents seem like an enemy of the social order, simply because they are following God’s word about how to raise a Godly family. This spirit can attack cultural issues like our Constitution and Bill of Rights, demanding that these documents change with time, following the descending migration of cultural attitudes.

Fighting against the spirit of the age requires that we place our trust in the Lord and His word even when our faith is being brutally attacked. As a culture of compromise attempts to lure us into a place of compromise, the truth of God will never fail to lead us away from an attempt at sabotage to gain a deeper understanding of His truth. This only happens if we choose to remain steady in our faith, unchanged by a changing world.
