Last night, I said to Jan, “I want to watch an old movie.” I suggested we watch the classic film starring Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.”
As we watched the film, it was done with an acting style and language out of date with modern cinema. Still, the message was solid and on point, especially at this moment in our national history. Truth and ethics are always present in each generation, whether it is 1939 or 2020. They transfer through time with those willing to carry the weight of their commitment.
What I especially liked in the movie was the 11th-hour appearance of redemption and restoration when all seemed lost. That is a story we all need to believe is still possible, for, without the hope of Godly intervention, it is too easy to become harsh and cynical and stop believing that goodness is still possible.
