THE BATTLE IS NOT OURS

Some battles in God’s Kingdom do not require our skill to gain victory. They only require our worship. The Lord will fight these battles to reveal the power of His name. At this time in history, we are in the middle of such a conflict. The Lord has a plan for His Church to engage the enemies formed against us.

King Jehoshaphat had a messenger come and tell him that a vast army had formed and was coming against him. In the distress of that message, the king lamented to God, “Did you not drive out those who lived in this land when your people Israel arrived? And did you not give this land forever to the descendants of your friend Abraham?” (II Chronicles 20: 7). In other words, Jehosaphat was saying, “Lord, are you going to let us lose this land after all you did to bring us here?”

Jehoshaphat continued his lament, “For they have come to throw us out of your land, which you gave us as an inheritance. O our God, won’t you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do but look to you for help” (vs. 11-12).

In the increasing lament, the Spirit of the Lord came upon a man named Jahaziel who prophesied, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (vs. 15). That word of prophecy encouraged the king who said, “Listen to me, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be able to stand firm. Believe in his prophets, and you will succeed.” (vs. 20).

As the people entered the field of battle worshippers led the way singing to the Lord and praising Him. They sang these words, “Give thanks to the Lord; his faithfulness endures forever” (vs. 21). As the people worshipped God in the face of an overwhelming army, something miraculous happened, “At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves” (vs. 22). When the infighting of the enemy was finally over, the ground was covered by their dead bodies as far as the eye could see. The victory happened without God’s people doing anything except to worship the Lord and stand in His presence.

After the battle was over, Jehoshaphat and his army plundered the fallen enemy and because of the great plunder they gathered, the place of the battle was named The Valley of Blessing.

In our day so much is coming against the Lord and His truth. It is too easy to attempt to fight these battles armed only with human strength and logic. That battle plan will lead to defeat. Some battles only the Lord can fight. When the armies of evil assemble against us, our calling is to worship the Lord declaring His goodness and faithfulness. As God’s people worship the Lord, he will turn the armies of darkness against themselves.

The victory would become a place of blessing to God’s people. The turning point was to choose to believe what sounded like an impossible prophetic promise. Because of our obedience and trust in God, the battlefield will be redefined as a place of blessing. The victory and praise that will come in these spiritual battles belongs to the Lord, not to us.

What seemed like an overwhelming defeat was inevitable the field of battle will become a place of blessing to God’s people. The turning point is to believe what sounded like an impossible prophetic promise. Because of our obedience and trust in God, the battlefield will be redefined as a place of blessing. The victory and praise that will come in these spiritual battles belongs to the Lord, not to us.
