After Jesus was born, two prophets confirmed His assignment. One prophet was named Simeon, and the other was Anna. Both were advanced in age.
Regarding Simeon, it was written that, “The Holy Spirit was on him” (Luke 2: 25). As Simeon waited for the Lord’s instructions, “The Spirit led him to the temple” (vs. 27). At the precise moment when Simeon arrived at the temple, he saw Joseph and Mary holding the infant Jesus. Simeon took Jesus in his arms, he prayed, “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” (vs. 29-32). Simeon had been waiting his entire life to experience this moment.
The other prophet was Anna. She was equally old and had also been waiting to see the Messiah. Anna had a different experience from Simeon. After only seven years of marriage, her husband died when she was still a young woman. She spent her remaining years in the temple waiting for the Lord’s arrival.
“She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying” (vs.37). The day when Joseph and Mary arrived at the temple, she “She gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem” (vs. 38).
If you are wondering about how to prophesy, all prophecy boils down to what happened to Simeon and Anna. They affirmed Jesus and His mission. That is the purpose of all prophecy.
When we speak prophetically, it will be like it was for Simeon when he expressed what would happen as a result of the revelation of Jesus, “The thoughts of many hearts will be revealed” (vs. 35). It will be in our day like it was when Jesus was revealed by two different prophets. Upon hearing what Simeon and Anna prophetically spoke about the Lord, the hearts of the hearers will be exposed, either denying or affirming Jesus. The same holds for today whenever Jesus is revealed.
