The writer of Hebrews, after affirming the supremacy of Jesus, inserted the following verse, “Therefore, angels are only servants – spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation” (Hebrews 1:14). If we understand the supremacy of Jesus Christ and the submission of the angelic hosts to His authority, we can have healthy and faith-building conversations about them.
The word “angel” is mentioned over 300 times in Scripture. Almost 200 of those mentions take place in the New Testament. Apparently, the intervention of angels and their interaction with believers was something known and experienced in the lives of the first-century Church. We seem to have either not been taught about angels or live chained to the fear that if we entertained their reality and activity in our lives we would somehow become strange, or worse, be labeled as some kind of spiritual nut case. It gets even worse if we actually saw an angel and shared our testimony about such an encounter.
While our prayers for help in a time of need are addressed to Jesus, it is perfectly reasonable to expect the Lord would release supernatural angelic helpers when the “Amen” of our prayer was finally uttered. Knowing such help is possible will release deeper levels of trust and hope in God when life seems overwhelming.
We have entered a time in history when angelic activity is on the rise. It is rising for a reason. We cannot contend with all that is transpiring in our personal lives and on the global stage without the help of angels. Expect them to come to do battle for us turning the tide of the current spiritual conflict toward a visible and astounding victory for the glory of God.
