THE SACRED NATURE OF MARRIAGE

In a marriage, we don’t have a partner. We have a husband or wife—a man and woman united in a unique expression of oneness with God. While a husband and wife may partner together in the responsibilities of this life, it is their bond of marriage, not the tasks they engage in, that defines what it means to be married as a believer.

As Paul described this kind of marriage, he first defined the mutual submission that needs to exist between a husband and wife: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:31). Paul then gave some specific instructions on how that mutual submission works out in each part of the relationship.

Paul quoted Genesis 2, “As the Scriptures say, ‘A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ, and the church are one. (vs. 31-31).

In a marriage between believers, our marriage is the expression of a beautiful mystery that exists between Christ and the Church. We should support that mystery in every way, even how we define that relationship to the rest of the world.
