Life can become a strenuous exercise at times like the time in which we are currently living. We need moments of release from an unrelenting pressure to always understand what is happening. These moments of release are not attempts to escape reality. They are times of recalibration and reordering of our lives to experience the peace of God.
Imagine a fretting King Saul sitting at the feet of young David, the most respected warrior of his time, who was invited to play a harp to calm Saul’s distress.
“David would take the harp and play it with his hand, and Saul would feel relieved and become well” (I Samuel 16:23). While Saul was being afflicted by an evil spirit, the principle remains. Saul was calmed because a godly musician was playing a harp.
The sounds of harps accompanied armies and were played in times of celebration. Its sound set the stage for national repentance. It was heard during spiritual warfare. The harp was one of the instruments that accompanied the message of prophets and seers.
Sounds resembling a harp will be heard in Heaven at the end of time as part of heaven’s choir. “And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of mighty ocean waves or the rolling of loud thunder. It was like the sound of many harpists playing together. This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God and before the four living beings and the twenty-four elders” (Revelation 14: 2-3).
When we are going through a strenuous and uncertain time of life, we can break its power over us by offering our unsettled spirit time to recalibrate and align with the peace of God. The sounds of a harp, or any instrument dedicated to the Lord, will help us sit alone with God and find His peace in the turmoil much quicker than trying to figure everything out in our strength and ability. That futile effort will always rob us of God’s peace.
Yesterday and today as I wrote this message, I was listening to the sounds of the harpist in the attached video. So much of what I was struggling with began to settle in my heart as the sounds of the harp dispelled my concerns as I allowed myself to enter God’s peace.
Thank you Garris. A good word in the midst of a culture which demands we give our full attention to the chaos at all times. The harp music was beautiful.
Thank you for the music. It is so relaxing and peaceful. I have never actually sat down and listened to harp music before. I need to find some harp CD’s. It is a wonderful way to spend time with God and be at peace in a world that has become very evil. May God bring Blessings upon you and your family.
