Our greatest protection is not the armies of the world and their armament or how many soldiers can be summoned for war. Our greatest protection is the voice of God in a season of turmoil. God’s voice will come to those who have learned to recognize its sound. The Lord has always been faithful to direct people with His wisdom when the wisdom of the world has failed.

As we enter a season of increasing cultural upheaval and the prospect of a civil and global war, it becomes increasingly important to hear the whispers of God amidst the noise and resulting disruption these events will produce.

When Elijah the prophet was hiding in a cave, a powerful wind, earthquake, and fire began to take place. Each event was absent of a critical element – the voice of God. The message Elijah needed to hear that day was not in these astounding events. The Lord spoke in a quiet voice, like the sound of a “gentle blowing” also translated as a “still, small voice” (I Kings 19:12). Elijah knew the sound of that voice.

As the world begins to demonstrate unusual events in nature and in the affairs of nations, the whispers of God will protect and direct us. “Right behind you, a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go,’ whether to the right or to the left” (Isaiah 30:21). The whispers of God will come from a place we did not expect.

A message like a gentle blowing wind or instructions coming from a direction we did not anticipate, is how the Lord will speak to His Church in times of confusion and fear. Those who know the sound of God’s voice will remain safe in times of upheaval when people are telling us all hope is lost. God’s whispers of direction will protect us and instruct us as to how we should live when the future is uncertain.
