“The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us’” (Matthew 1:23).
Immanuel is a word used frequently during Christmas. His presence is larger than a theological concept or definition. It defines the presence of God among people. It means God is with all of us no matter where we are in our faith journey. Without His inviting presence among us, none of us could know Him.
Today, as our family and friends gather with us to celebrate the Lord’s birth, look across the table and include each person in the celebration of the One who is Immanuel. Include those with a strong faith and those still trying to understand what faith means. Include those who have not yet embraced the love of Jesus, even some whose lives and words shame Him and His truth. Immanuel is more powerful than the strongest rejection of His love. He can break through any rejection of His love to make Himself known. Jesus, the Immanuel of God, is much larger than we understand.
Today, give the Lord permission to expand your understanding of the power of His name as you gather to celebrate His birth. Knowing He is present will redefine the atmosphere of your Christmas gathering. Our Christmas celebration is made merry because of the presence of Jesus in our midst.
What wonderful thoughts! Merry Christmas to you and all your family.
