WHAT SORT OF NEW TEACHING IS THIS?

There’s a significant difference between teaching from a place of revelation and teaching facts and other people’s opinions. Revelation releases God’s authority. It will confront the spirits embedded within the Church that are influencing and controlling people. This is a work of demonic spirits. Facts and opinions do not disturb these spirits. Only revelation can do that. Our best example of this is how Jesus taught and preached.

Jesus went into a synagogue in Capernaum, and He began to teach. “The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority – quite unlike the teachers of religious law” (Mark 1:22).

The word “authority” used here represents the ability to express the will of God and release the weight and intended purpose of what God wants to do when we teach and preach in His name. When Jesus entered the synagogue and began teaching with authority, the atmosphere of the assembly changed.

“Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, ‘Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!” (vs.23-24).

What’s amazing about this verse is that the confrontation with evil spirits occurred in the synagogue. It’s also interesting that the demon-possessed man used the word “us” referring to more than one demonic spirit that was in attendance.

“Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. ‘What sort of new teaching is this?’ they asked excitedly. ‘It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!” (vs.27). In the middle of Jesus’ teaching, He gave orders to dark spirits.

The same Greek word used to describe the authority of Jesus’ teaching in verse 22 is also used here in verse 27. The amazed audience asked, “What sort of new teaching is this?” It was new teaching for the hearers, because they were not used to the sound of revelation.

Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon and Andrew. After a series of healings and deliverances took place in their home, Jesus said, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came. So, he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons” (vs. 39). Again, Jesus’ presence and his teaching confronted the demons embedded in the synagogue.

When we reduce our preaching and teaching to the recitation of facts and human opinion, it may appeal to someone’s intellect, but it will not release the power of God. God’s power will confront what has been allowed to remain in our gatherings, unchallenged.

God’s word, spoken with Heaven’s authority, will disrupt what we have allowed to exist in the Church without confronting its presence. Preaching facts and the opinions of others cannot accomplish that kind of deliverance; only Heaven’s revelation can do that.
