As the nations of the world and the streets of some cities in America are exhibiting increasing levels of turmoil, Psalm 46 becomes very tangible, “The nations are in chaos and their kingdoms crumble” (vs. 6). While the chaos is increasing and governments appear to be crumbling, the Psalm reassures us that no matter how intense the turmoil becomes, “The Lord of Heaven’s army is here among us” (vs.7).  Because of His presence among us, if our spiritual eyes have been opened, we are invited to “Come, see the glorious works of the Lord” (vs.8). 

Knowing that Heaven’s army is present and that the glorious works of the Lord are taking place, we are instructed in verse 10 to “Be still and know that I am God!”

To be still is not what we might think it means. The word “still” in the Hebrew language means “to let down, relax, drop.” It references a person relaxing their hands, choosing to let go of things that produce false hope. Once we let go we are able then to take hold of true hope and the courage that hope can produce. That is what creates a stillness of heart. The verse could be translated to mean, “When you see the nations in chaos and fear is on the rise, don’t let go of hope, I am here, and I am your God!”

When social disorder is on the rise and chaos is rampant, take courage. The Lord is here among and He is doing mighty works of redemption no matter what we see or hear. Knowing God and being courageously still in His presence is the only solid and dependable place to stand in times of social and spiritual chaos.
