We are living in a time when expressing an opinion can make us a target for an insult. No one will be immune to these assaults. Some insults are expressed by a passive-aggressive personality that may sound legitimate at first, but were created to confront, not to bring clarity. How we choose to respond to an insult will define whether we enter into a foolish exchange with the one insulting us and become its victim or remain free from its influence.
When this happens, it’s important to consider the impact of our words before we speak in response to an insult. A quick response without the discernment of the Spirit is a fool’s errand. It’s a hook to which foolishness is attached to lure us into its trap. Once we choose to respond in kind, it will define us as foolish as the ones who are doing the insulting. “A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted” (Proverbs 12:16).
Choosing to remain calm before we respond gives the Lord time to create for us a righteous response, not a response that is created from the wound of an illegitimate confrontation.
“Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing” (vs. 18). This verse cuts both ways – to the one who speaks the insult and the one who responds too quickly before allowing the Lord to create a proper response. Both sides will increase the tension and bring further division, not healing.
The revelation of what is true can take time. “Truthful words stand the test of time” (vs. 19). Those who choose to remain calm when insulted will hear things from the Lord that an offended spirit cannot hear. Waiting to hear what the Lord has to say is far more impactful than speaking too quickly from a place of offense. It is better to remain silent when insulted than to speak too quickly and miss the timing of the Lord.
An incredibly timely message for me.
Thank you.
