WHEN PEOPLE OR INSTITUTIONS FAIL US

We must be careful where we place our trust. A misplaced trust will put us in a place of spiritual and emotional jeopardy where disappointment and disillusionment are sure to come. This is why some fall away from the faith. They did not continue to trust in God or His promises.

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes” (Psalm 114:8-9).

To take refuge in God means that when life is not working out as we had anticipated, we need to seek refuge in the Lord and no one or nothing else. Our refuge in God is fueled by our hope in His faithfulness, not in people, or the princes of culture that rule us.  The root meaning of the word refuge means “to flee.”  When we become disappointed and disillusioned, we need to run to God, not to people or an institution. It is only the Lord who can keep us safe when so many are asking the “Why?” question.

The “trust” part of these verses is an image of someone laying down before what they had put their hope in, especially when nothing seems to be working out as they had originally planned or believed. Like all issues in this life, who and what we choose to worship will determine the course of our lives. We will all lay down before someone or something in an act of worship.

As the Psalmist said, the better way to live this life will be determined who we prostrate ourselves before in worship in uncertain times because in the end, it is only God and our worship of Him, that will give us the hope that something better is coming, even as our circumstances are telling us something different.
