WHEN WE THINK WE KNOW IT ALL

A lot of what I hear spoken in the Church sounds like the title of a book written by Jerry Cook, “A Few Things I’ve Learned Since I Knew It All.” Jerry wrote this book deep into his life of faith when he had to unlearn some things and then learn new things about God and His Kingdom.

As Jerry now stands in the presence of Jesus in eternity, he has learned many new things he did not rightly understand and interpret in this life. All of us will experience that same heavenly revelation when we depart this world and finally meet the Lord.

Once we think we know it all in this life, we can sound like a modern version of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and teachers of religious law. We might even gain an advanced degree and be hosted on a YouTube channel presenting our know-it-all assumptions.

With Jesus, there will always be something new to discover. These new things are written in God’s word, and they will interrupt our current understanding. We will change, but God’s word has always remained true in its original context and has not been affected by wandering human interpretations.

As the Lord was explaining to His disciples what would come to pass in the future, He told them, “Don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you, for I will give you the right words and such wisdom, that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you” (Luke 21: 14-15).

We will be unable to respond with God’s wisdom and His truth if we think we have everything figured out. That mindset will shut the door on future revelation.

In those moments, we will respond from a prepared script, not from the Spirit. We will speak from our shallow and immature level of understanding that was created when we thought we knew it all.

Words of Spirit-inspired revelation will come to those who don’t presume they have all of life and faith figured out. They will be words of revelation that only a humble and open heart can hear.
