Many will ask the Lord, “Why am I going through this?” Certain events in life are very painful and disruptive. Some wish they could understand the purpose behind the pain and disruptions they are experiencing.
In David’s song of praise, he sang a song honoring God, and in one line of his song, He sang, “He trains my hands for battle” (II Samuel 22:35). David knew that all that was happening in his life was training for the battles that would come to him in the present or at some point, in the future. David knew he was being trained to trust God. That trust was his greatest weapon of war.
One of the attributes of being trained for battle was a sense of security only God can provide. That security happens no matter how well-trained David becomes or how difficult a situation may appear. David sang, “You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping” (vs. 37). Even a narrow victory would become a wide path for David, especially when he was outnumbered and outgunned in battle.
While our path of salvation is narrow and exclusive in Jesus, we are always walking on a wide path if we are following the Lord, no matter how narrow our options may appear in a spiritual battle. All that happens on that wide path is for the training of our hearts and minds to trust the Lord, even when the odds of our survival seem slim and out of reach.
