A Profound Love

On this day of Passover, I am reminded of the unique assemblage of disciples who sat at the table with Jesus during the Last Supper. Even His betrayer was breaking bread with Him. During that meal, Jesus made a profound statement, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples” (John 13:36).

What made the Lord’s statement so profound was what it did not include. He made no mention of love based on our politics, social status, intellect, or education. He assumed we would understand the expansiveness of His love since He chose twelve disciples to follow Him who expressed such a diversity of life.

Maybe the way forward so many of us seek will be discovered when we stop attaching demeaning labels upon or making demands of other believers requiring them to align with our point of view before we can truly love them. Then our love for one another would become living proof to the world that we have something to offer that is different from the never-ending social scuffles taking place on the stage of culture that for some have sadly become the only message of the Gospel they see or hear.
