Though so many years ago, I’ll never forget walking into a church building looking to fill a big hole in my heart. It had been a time of great upheaval in American society, not unlike some of what we see today. It was also the latter years of the Jesus revolution. And I was turning back to the God of my youth.

I was struck mostly by the teaching and preaching of the Scriptures. The pastor encouraged and inspired the people, yet never hesitated to speak the truth. He was also unafraid to address hard issues of the day. He actively defended God’s principles.

Over four decades later, it is obvious that we lost our godly influence in the culture. So, I am on the lookout for leaders who are unafraid to speak up and reflect God’s values, both in the Church and in the government of our towns, our schools and businesses, our state and nation.

Paul knew what it was like to live in a pagan world. He was afraid that the Church of Corinth might be corrupted and lose their single-hearted devotion and pure love for Jesus. In fact, the people seemed glad to tolerate anyone who preached a different Jesus. They accepted a spirit and gospel that was false. These imposters were deceitful ministers who masqueraded as apostles of the Anointed One.

Paul was not surprised, nor should we. Afterall, even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. His servants will also be pretenders, but whose end will be according to their works (see 2 Corinthians 11:2-4, 13-14). 

Those who step up in the Church and in the public square are the leaders I listen to and highly respect. Pastors, parents, educators, employers, and employees: Speak up, regardless of the push-back. Don’t leave a vacuum where deception is tolerated. Truth does not evolve. It remains true throughout the ages.
