CHANGING GOD

I have noticed a trend among some believers. They are attempting to change the nature of God. Some of the motivation behind this change comes from reading difficult sections of Scripture and assuming there is no deeper understanding behind the challenging facts being represented. In this profound misunderstanding of the nature of God, He has even been called cruel and unloving.

Faith is not a pick-and-choose exercise. An attempt to change God is not about coming to a deeper understanding of the Lord and His ways. It reshapes God to fit our devolving social norms. The unchanging God of both the Old and New Testaments is the same Lord, only the way of our salvation offered in the completed work of Jesus Christ is different.

A quick review of Scripture reveals this unchanging God.

“For I the Lord do not change” (Malachi 3:16).

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17).

“The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations” (Psalm 33:11).

These Scriptures cross both covenants and any reinterpretation of God we might create to appease someone of weak faith or to make ourselves feel better when we read something challenging in God’s word. This lessening of God is the gateway to the doctrines of demons.

After the writer of Hebrews noted the eternal nature of Christ and His eternal majesty, he wrote, “We must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it” (Hebrews 2:1).

Be very cautious of anyone who represents a changed God, no matter their fame or recognition. The consequence of accepting a lesser representation of the Lord is a very dangerous choice to make. It will have a serious consequence when we stand before the Lord to give an account of our lives.
