The laws of man are not the laws of God. Recently, the governor of Massachusetts passed a law allowing a baby to be aborted up to and including the time of birth. It has been labeled as women’s health care. Ten other states have ruled the same way. At the signing of this dark legislation, a group of women stood around the governor and celebrated this ruling with giggles and smiles.

The bill stated that abortion may be considered reasonable in certain extreme circumstances like the imminent death of the mother or in cases involving a lethal diagnosis of a baby in the womb. The bill also gives license to a doctor to kill the baby because of the mental health of the mother. Under the new law, the decision to abort is left to a physician’s judgment.  The definition of the mother’s mental health is a wide definition that can include a mother’s depression. 

In a culture that has been progressively dismissing or redefining evil as good and good as evil, this bill is not a surprise. It still surprised me to see it celebrated so gleefully with applause and cheering.

God’s word tells a different story. David wrote, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book” (Psalm 139: 13-16).

We see the soul-scarring of mothers who chose the “right” to abort their babies. Without exception, they will need deep healing in their spirit, soul, and body. What they need most is an encounter with God and His mercy.

Each one of us was formed by the hands of our Creator. As we say in our home: “We were created in love, by Love, for love.” He is the protector of the most vulnerable among us, and no one is more vulnerable than a baby in a mother’s womb. 

Keep intervening for justice, and all that is right and good according to the word of the Lord on behalf of your state and country. Keep interceding for righteous laws. The seeker-sensitive Church that lost its distinctiveness is waking up to the reality that where the Church goes, so does the culture.
