We have a saying in our home: “We are created in love, by Love, for love.” Each one of us was formed by the hands of our Creator. He is the protector of the most vulnerable among us, and no one is more vulnerable than a baby in a mother’s womb. 

Recently, the governor of Massachusetts passed a law allowing a baby to be aborted up to and including the time of birth. It has been labeled as women’s health care. At the signing of this dark legislation, a group of women stood around the governor and celebrated this ruling with giggles and smiles.

The bill stated that abortion may be considered reasonable in certain extreme circumstances like the imminent death of the mother or in cases involving a lethal diagnosis of a baby in the womb. The bill also gives license to a doctor to kill the baby because of the mental health of the mother. Under the new law, the decision is left to “the professional judgment of a physician.” 

In a culture that has progressively dismissed or redefined evil as good and good as evil, this bill is not a surprise. It still surprised me to see it gleefully celebrated with smiles and applause. They are commemorating a law allowing a medical team to intentionally end the life of a viable human for reasons that have nothing to do with the baby being able to survive or the mother’s life being in danger.

Dr. Robert Malone wrote that at the same ages, premature infants are treated as patients in neonatal intensive-care units, where medical teams may fight desperately to keep them alive. We need laws put back in place that recognize the rights of an unborn human. 

And we need compassion, excellent medical care, and so much more for women facing what sometimes feels like impossible choices. Researchers documented reasons for late abortions that involved finances, transportation, relationships, delayed recognition of pregnancy, difficulty deciding whether to keep the child, and difficulty obtaining the procedure earlier. 

We see the soul-scars of mothers who aborted their babies for any reason. Later abortions are not physically healthy for the mother. Without exception, these mothers need an encounter with God’s mercy for the healing of deep wounds.

There are now ten states, including our state of Oregon, that have laws allowing full-term abortions. On behalf of our states and country, we keep interceding for righteous laws, for justice and all that is right and good according to the word of the Lord. 

King David described God’s heart for each unborn child: “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book” (Psalm 139: 13-16).
