The words of Genesis 1— “And God created”—take on deeper meaning in the age of AI (Artificial Intelligence). God created from nothing: a void empty of any contributing elements. He did not draw on human wisdom or advanced technology. He brought the universe, our world, and us into existence from a place of pure nothingness.

A former Google engineer once described AI as “effectively a God.” Sam Altman of OpenAI has spoken of building AI as “creating a religion.” Oxford mathematician and professor John Lennox has made clear that these statements are not mere metaphors—they are warnings.

Lennox points out that AI already displays qualities we normally associate with God. It appears omniscient because we can ask it almost any question. It seems omnipresent because, through the Internet, its reach is everywhere. Because of these remarkable abilities, some groups have begun to treat it as divine. Lennox argues this is not progress. It is idolatry. However powerful AI becomes, it remains a human creation and is therefore fundamentally less than God.

This pattern is nothing new under the sun. Nature, science, and technology that appear godlike have always followed an ancient temptation. Every person is created with a God-shaped spirit designed for worship. Unless we worship the One True God, we will attribute deity to something He created. We will place our hope, our focus, even our worship in nature, science, other people, ourselves—or now in artificial intelligence.

We must remain alert to the dark side of any tool that can be used for both good and evil. Human nature is the constant in every variable. Wisdom and justice are needed as guardrails of protection—especially against overreach by government itself.

We can respond to the obsession with technology and its potential misuse with fear and anxiety. Or we can welcome what is being exposed as a sign that God’s light is piercing the darkness. We need to ask Him for discernment at every turn.  

So many are searching for meaning and purpose in their attachments, addictions, and idols We are commissioned to reach out to those blinded by the god of this world with the only good news that satisfies: Jesus Christ.
