A desire of mine each day is to see world events through the lens of Heaven. I need to see the bigger picture behind the social divisions and wars. I need to see what God sees and what He is doing.
To see Heaven’s perspective, I read Isaiah’s astonishing prophecy that God will give divine grace to Egypt and Assyria (symbolic of the Gentile world). To lay the background, Isaiah has been telling Judah for three years that to trust in a broken world system and to form an alliance with it is folly. However, the Assyrian threat draws Judah toward an alliance with Egypt, known for its wisdom of the world, but whose manipulations and promises prove to be futile and empty.
All problems of society, economics, and politics have a spiritual cause, but Egypt has no concept of God’s ways. Liberties have been under attack and without justice and rule of law, civil strife is the outcome of their choices. The people are morally responsible for their societal breakdown.
God is never the author of human suffering. His divine wrath is expressed when His hand of protection is lifted from Egypt. As a result, a perverse (foolish) spirit causes Pharaoh’s “wise” counselors to be wrong every time. (see Isaiah 19:13-14).
Egypt watches in awe and fear when God delivers the land of Judah from the Assyrian assault. Five Egyptian cities will adopt the language of Canaan and make a promise of allegiance to Yahweh. When they cry out to Him for help against those who oppress them, he will send them a mighty deliverer who will rescue them.
Isaiah prophesies, “The Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians.” He also prophesies that both Assyria and Egypt will be joined to tiny Judah as one people, under one God. All three nations will be blessed with words of endearment. God calls Egypt His people. He calls Assyria His handiwork. He calls Israel His inheritance(see vs 15-23).
I look at the upheaval in the world and remember that everything is subject to the word of the Lord. Therefore, nothing is impossible, even though nations are not aligned with God, and they are unable to read the signs of the times or even see the danger of their own actions.
The Lord’s magnetism unites us where evil has torn the world apart. My hope is in Him and His word. He will make himself known to the nations. His Kingdom of peace is spreading with the unveiling of His brilliance. There is going to be a reconciliation. There’s going to be a reunion. We will be like long-lost brothers and sisters bonded together.
Even now, I am blessing this world with God’s blessings:
Be blessed—you are God’s people!
Be blessed—you are God’s handiwork!
Be blessed—you are God’s inheritance!
