Needing “Just one more thing” is constantly advertised to us, like it was for those who were following Ponce de León in search of the Fountain of Youth. I am reminded of King Solomon’s writings: “Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind” (Ecclesiastes 6:9).
We are told we need just one more thing to make us happy. One more extreme exercise to make us fit, one more dream vacation, one more makeover, one more success, etc. The list is endless, and so is the ultimate dissatisfaction. “Just one more thing” is not about the “thing” itself. It is the lie motivating us to join in the futility of a search for meaning that has no lasting permanence. It is the filling of an empty hole in our hearts that has no bottom.
We are searching for meaning and purpose. We have an empty space that can only be filled by something that transcends this world, something eternal. What if we made a practice of turning every wish, every desire, every dream back to Jesus, the Source of Life Himself?
When you ask and keep asking, you will receive. When you seek and keep seeking, you will discover. When you knock on Heaven’s door and keep knocking, it will be opened for you (see Luke 11:9-10).
