The Weapon of Fatigue

I see fatigue taking place in the people of God. This fatigue comes from living under a never-ending assault against Jesus Christ, His Kingdom, and His followers. While certain seasons of life can carry a unique fatigue factor, to ascribe this sense of fatigue to only our current circumstance is to misinterpret an important spiritual reality.

One of Satan’s most effective tactics is to cause us to lose heart. To cause that loss of heart, he must first wear us down. When the prophet Daniel was addressing the various beast spirits that would attempt to overthrow God’s Kingdom, a single verse addressed this issue of fatigue.

“And he will speak against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law” (Daniel 7:25).

The phrase “wear down the saints” is translated as “to wear away, to wear out or harass constantly.” The activity of wearing us down takes place in our minds. This wearing away of our mental resolve must be recognized and challenged for what it is – an assault on our faith.  If not challenged, this is where many believers simply give up and embrace despair and futility.

Our Western interpretation of the Church rarely mentions conflict with Satan, the activity of his demonic troops, or the need to engage in spiritual warfare. A fatigued Church will eventually become ineffective in its mission. Satan knows this and will do all he can to keep us from recognizing that truth. The first step in the process of being refreshed and restored in our faith is to realize what is happening. Sight is the first step toward a resurrected faith. If your spiritual fatigue is causing you to not see that you are backing away, sitting down, and giving up, you are under attack. It is time to fight back and recapture the joy of your salvation.
