God’s actions throughout history are the pattern for the future. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The story of Joseph is a clear testimony of how prophecy can direct the course of nations and become a life-saving revelation.

There will always be magicians, false prophets, and those considered wise by the world’s standards. We need to recognize the counterfeit. We must welcome the Spirit of prophecy, which is the testimony of Jesus. We are responsible to test every prophetic word and its interpretation, and then to receive it as a weapon for spiritual warfare.

God’s sovereign plan superseded Joseph’s immaturity, mistakes, troubles, betrayal, enslavement, and false imprisonment. Listening to God and standing on His word gave Joseph the strength of character and the wisdom he needed.

Two years after Joseph was sent to prison, Pharaoh had two dreams that troubled him deeply. None of his magicians or wise men could interpret them. When Pharaoh heard about Joseph, he sent for him immediately.

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it. I cannot do it, Joseph replied to Pharaoh, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires” (Genesis 41:15-16).

After hearing Joseph’s interpretation and his wise counsel on how to prepare for the coming famine, Pharaoh elevated him to rule the nation, second only to himself. Joseph was only thirty years old when he received that assignment.

Just as Joseph had said, seven years of abundance came, followed by seven years of severe famine everywhere. Egypt had food—and more. The world came to buy grain from Joseph. Among those who came were the very brothers who had once sold him into slavery.

“Whoever has ears, let them hear” (Matthew 11:15).
