There is a blessing associated with having discernment. The Psalmist prayed: “O Lord, listen to my cry: give me the discerning mind that you promised. Listen to my prayer; rescue me as you promised” (Psalm 119:169-170). The Spirit-Filled Life Bible says: “Let my cry come before You, O Lord; Give me understanding according to Your word. Let my supplication come before You; deliver me according to Your word.”
The word “discerning” has been translated as “perception, insight, or understanding.” Discernment is the ability to separate truth from error, right from wrong. As a result, we can clearly see what is happening in the world around us.
A discerning heart trembles in awe when discovering that the Lord’s Word is entirely true. It is like someone who finds a great treasure that turns into a source of true joy (see vs. 161-162).
A discerning heart comes when we love His Word. His Word blesses us with such great peace and well-being that nothing will cause us to stumble (a stumbling block of offense; to be offended; to bring on misfortune or calamity) (see vs 165).
A discerning heart demonstrates that we love the Lord’s testimonies, instructions, and counsel (see vs 167).
Lord, like the Psalmist prayed: We too must have more revelation of your Word. We ask for discernment, insight, and an understanding heart according to your Word. Rescue us, just like you promised. We ask for your gift of discerning of spirits. As we learn to trust Your Word, You teach us to trust Your heart, and to have an appropriate trust for those around us.
