On occasion, God will perform a miracle so astounding that natural science cannot accurately explain what really happens. A miracle like this happened during one of Israel’s battles.

“On the day the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said, “Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon. So, the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies” (Joshua 10: 12-13).

As I studied this event, commentators have offered all kinds of explanations for what happened, mostly based on natural causes. These explanations were all built upon natural science and the nuances of language. It has even been explained as just a prolonged day or an eclipse. But all these explanations lessen what actually took place.

A similar miracle happened to Hezekiah when he was deathly ill and prayed for mercy from the Lord. The Lord heard his prayer, extended his life by 15 more years, and gave him a sign to prove that He would do as He promised. He told him: “I will cause the sun’s shadow to move ten steps backward on the sundial of Ahaz! So, the shadow on the sundial moved backward ten steps” (Isaiah 38: 7-8).

David wrote, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). The Lord created the natural world by His word. He can cause the sun and moon to stay in place. He can reverse physical time. He can do anything He desires to produce a miracle, even to the objections from natural science and the opinions of those who doubt the miraculous power of God.

We need miracles today. God is still creating, transforming darkness into light and chaos into order. With unlimited power, His words flow from who He is. He is the great I Am, who spoke, “Let there be light, and there was light.
