TURNING OFF THE DISTRACTIONS

The voice of God can become so buried beneath layers of life’s noise that the still and quiet sound of God’s voice is no longer heard.  People who live within such a capsule of noise will end up allowing the loud and boisterous voice of culture to define reality and matters of faith and in the end, lose their distinctive edge of perception.

Sometimes, I will watch a YouTube video of a police officer responding to a critical incident who has activated their body-worn camera in preparation for arrival at the scene. I’ve noticed some officers had their patrol car AM or FM radio playing while responding to the call. Having been a former police training officer, I would never allow my recruits to do that and there are several reasons why.

We could get distracted and lose our focus and that could get us killed or complicate our ability to respond to a call for help. Songs, for example, place an extra layer of noise between an officer and what is taking place inside and outside the patrol car. It can also evoke emotions and memories that might take an officer somewhere in their head that could place yet another layer in the way of an immediate response. When the stuff does hit the fan and hits it quickly, a police officer must be able to respond immediately without any layers of distraction to slow their response.

Are you in a place where you can hear God’s still small voice? We are the ones who must position our lives in that place. It is our choice. If not, our response to life’s challenges will begin to look and sound more like a response from an unredeemed person than a response of faith that is unique and apart from the surface noise being offered to us as reality.

In this hour it is critical that all distractions be removed from our lives that are additional layers of noise and emotion that will not faithfully reveal the intentions of God. The people you are training to follow the sound of God’s voice might not care for your decision to shut off the extra noise at first, but when life goes sideways and they survive an ordeal, they will realize their training is what helped preserve their spiritual lives because they had removed the distractions of life that would have prevented them from hearing the still small voice of God.

Some cannot hear God’s voice in utter silence, while others hear him during the storm and cacophony of life.

Reminds me of an oft-repeated question uttered by Sheriff Roscoe P Coltrain at least once in every “Dukes of Hazard” episode “Got your ears on, Little Buddy?”

Having situational awareness is needed not just in the here and now “physical world”, but also in the spiritual realm. Thank you for reinforcing that.
