My father was a carpenter. As a small boy, I would watch him hold up a weighted line called the plumbline to see if something was straight or crooked. It is a simple tool consisting of a long cord with a weight called a plumb-bob attached to one end.
Something even as simple as a plumbline is defined by a mathematical law of nature. It points toward Earth’s center of gravity for a true vertical direction. It’s not an opinion or preference. My father used it to keep every part of a construction project aligned with a true measurement. He never allowed anything to be built crooked.
The prophet Amos had a vision of the Lord standing beside a wall holding a plumb line to see if it was still straight. He asked Amos, “what do you see?” Amos answered, “A plumb line.” The Lord replied, “I will test my people with this plumb line” (Amos 7:7-8).
To test if something is “still straight” means it’s not just a one-time check. We hear the word, “what do you see?” and if we have ears to hear, we can see the subtle ways we determine our own reality and our destiny without a true plumbline.
If we lean on our own understanding and human reasoning, we “lean” off-kilter, crooked or bent—the definition of “iniquity.” There is a propensity, a weakness of character, and a damage in our soul formed by sin.
We have a plumbline in the Spirit. Jesus the Messiah, who is the Word and the reliable weight of truth—is the fulfillment of Scriptures. The Scriptures point to Jesus.
If we do not allow His Word to test the integrity of what we believe, we can expect a life of distortion.
The West is reaping the consequences for defying both physical and spiritual laws. God is shining a bright light on corruption in our nation allowed to flourish for years. The networks and plans of anarchists are being exposed. Funded by unimaginable fraud, this crookedness is so pervasive, it is easy to get discouraged.
We are living in God’s opportune time for a reset, both personally and corporately. It is a time of uprooting and pulling up and then planting what is right and just. Though difficult to see, keep thanking Him for all the exposure. Keeping “seeing” why we need the True Plumbline.
But don’t stay focused on the darkness under the spotlight and get drawn into it. Stay in alignment by simply turning your eyes to the Plumbline and His Word. With gratitude, bring each exposure of darkness disturbing your peace to the Source of Light.
