There is something much deeper that we can all possess beyond personality types, family dynamics, lineages, and inheritances. Those who know God can learn to discern spiritual realities.

Ignoring important truths distorts our thinking. Human interpretations of reality are not enough. Human empathy is not enough to produce effective concern and action. Where is our discernment when evidence of harm appears despite good intentions to help or promote the welfare of others? Where is the common sense when we make matters worse by repeating the same failure over and over again? Isn’t that self-destruction and deliberate sabotage?

There are unchanging truths that must be applied in both the laws of nature and the spiritual realm. Otherwise, it will simply not work, or cause unintended harm, even death. We must make God’s wisdom and discernment our goals for life. Wisdom wrapped in His truth and displayed through our common sense will rise to the top of our decision-making.

Listen to a wise man:

“My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them” Proverbs 3:21).

“Common sense and success belong to Me. Insight and strength are mine” (Proverbs 8:14).

“The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense” (Proverbs 10:21).

“He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity” (Proverbs 2:7).

Examples of common sense and discernment needed today:

• It is common sense to understand that no political party is perfect. But it is not common sense to shirk responsibility by not voting for those imperfect leaders. We have been given a gift to choose leaders who will best follow the Constitution. Who will uphold law and order and our freedoms granted by God.
• It is not common sense to hate our leaders. To hate them is to hate ourselves and our country. Instead of dividing left or right, we must discern between God’s Kingdom and the kingdom of darkness. By dealing with chaos, disorder, and mayhem, we will prosper in peace where we live.
• It is not common sense to believe a man can become a woman. Or a woman can become a man. Or think two people of the same sex can become one in a covenant of marriage. Jesus said: “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female. For this reason…a man will be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh” (Matthew 19:4-5 & Mark 10:6-9).
• It is not common sense to think we can discern truth apart from God’s eternal word. Only He can give us insight into His wise plans designed just for each of us. He holds in His hands the courage, strength, and understanding we need. Only He has the key to the hidden storehouse of wisdom. He becomes our bodyguard, protecting us when we choose what is right and follow His ways.
